Stormzy - Not That Deep ; Analysis [Case Study 3]

Artist: Stormzy
Song: Not That Deep
Released: 20th July 2014
Recorded: 2014
Genre: Grime
Producer(s): Heavy Trackers

This song is what put Stormzy on the map in the music industry as this turned out to be a catchy song due to the chorus 'Not That Deep' He was called to The Jools Holland show to perform this live on BBC 2 and received great feedback. Stormzy has performed this song for many major channels and programmes such as Live Lounge for Trevor Nelson, Mobo Live Series, Live at the Future Festival and many more shows he has performed at. Stormzy even went on to releasing and E.P called Not That Deep, doing remixes with other big artist's such as Section Boyz. Stormzy then ended up releasing the instrumental with a hook Heavy Trackers created 'Not That Deep' for other upcoming artists to rap on.

This is a performance based music video which has a narrative to the video as he is lip rapping to the song as the music was already pre-recorded. The reason why this has a Narative is so that people can relate to what he is talking about. Not that deep was a good title to name a song as it was a well known saying as everyone used to say it. Not that deep means No big deal. The reason we can tell this is also a performance is because many people were in the video, riding bikes and running through a shopping center, Stormzy also wore a mask in the music video to entertain the audience which can be definately be seen as a performance.

When Stormzy started rapping the camera angle started with a medium close up on Stormzy which revealed that he is the artist with authority. After that there was a wide shot which showed stormzy with his friends. Normally in grime music videos the artist's friends are in the videos to show support to the artist. An extra long shot was added in the video to show that everyone was on bikes, this reveals that teenagers like to ride bikes. The camera shot was mostly a medium shot on stormzy with his friends in the background as Stormzy has priority in the video as it is his song.  Mise-en-scene was also a big part in the video as we can see in the beginning they were riding bikes on the car park as there was space. During the video they were shooting the video through a shopping center as they were running through, however we can tell that the camera was hand held as when they were running through the shopping center the camera was wobbling slightly. I believe they did this because it shows that they are original because not anyone has really done something like that, the reason why i say this is because professional music videos use equipment instead of hand held when moving at a rapid pace. There were things that were edited the video, one obvious one was when the scene goes from one to another whether it being at a different location or at the same doing something else or with props included such as the bikes being involved. In addition another thing that was edited in the video was in the beginning which were credits. There were no special effects in the video as it is kept simple and no complication involved in the video.

I believe the target audience is from 14-21 and i think that they are encouraged to buy the record as many of the teenagers can relate to the song. They can also be encouraged as Stormzy did perform this song at many places to gain a massive audience towards the song.

The ideas i could take from this video is to not use special effects in the video as the video can be kept simple and what i will subvert into my music video is to enjoy what i am doing in the video as we can see Stormzy and his friends enjoy the performance done towards the video.
However an editing technique i will use from this video to add to mine is to add credits in the end. and a camera technique i would use for my video is mostly close up/ medium shot on the artist mainly as they have priority in the video.
