TREATMENT!
Wednesday, 21 September 2016
Treatment process...
Today in lesson we decided to get it started with the treatment, what we did was print out the lyrics of our chosen song which is one of mine called 'Cold Streets' for the music video and annotated what we intend to do in the video for each line. As we plan for this to be this is both a performance/ narrative based video annotating the lyrics would make it easier for us as a group.
In this annotation we planned things such as location and props that we needed however we will go into full detail when we start the actual treatment.

What we did in lesson - Preliminary Task [Editing]
In lesson we finished everything to do with filming and started on the editing. What we were doing was putting the best parts of what we filmed and edited it to create a music video out of it, we tried our best make it as creative as we can as a group. Editing the video was an advantage as we found new things out in the video such as how to add effects and so on. My group worked hard and as a team, we took an hour to edit the video, we found it fun to do as a task.

What we did in lesson - Preliminary task [Learning how to set up camera]
Today in lesson we had a teacher who is experienced with dslr camera's come in to speak to our class to teach us how to set up the camera according to the lighting as the lighting is very important. We found out the basics of what to do when starting to record in order.
Firstly set the correct video settings, press menu on the first slide go to image quality and set it to a symbol which looks like a quarter pie and an L next to it.
Secondly flick across a couple slides to Movie Rec size and set to 1920x1080 25.
Thirdly on the side of the lens is a little switch, flick it to MF from AF. Focusing the lens whilst in AF can damage the lens.
Fourthly setting the camera to manual by rolling the wheel n the top of the camera which manual is indicated by the letter M.
After that we use the wheel (not the wheel above) by the shutter release to adjust shutter speeds. 50 is perfect for film.
Continuing from that we change the ISO settings by holding the button labeled ISO which ranges from 100 all the way to 1800 which sets the correct lighting for the camera depending on the lighting of the natural surroundings.
Lastly is the aperture. Holding the button labeled AV and use the scroll wheel to adjust the aperture.

What we did in lesson - Preliminary task
In lesson today we went into out groups which we are in for the music video task. The reason why we did this was to do a preliminary task planning for a practice music video so we are used to what we are going to do in the real music video. The song we chose was Queen Speech 4 by Lady Leshurr as it is a song similar to the genre which we are going to be doing as a group. We printed out the lyrics so we can plan what is to be done in the video relating to the lyrics. In tomorrows lesson we will start recording the music video according to how we have planned it out.

Stormzy - Not That Deep ; Analysis [Case Study 3]
Artist: Stormzy
Song: Not That Deep
Released: 20th July 2014
Recorded: 2014
Genre: Grime
Producer(s): Heavy Trackers
This song is what put Stormzy on the map in the music industry as this turned out to be a catchy song due to the chorus 'Not That Deep' He was called to The Jools Holland show to perform this live on BBC 2 and received great feedback. Stormzy has performed this song for many major channels and programmes such as Live Lounge for Trevor Nelson, Mobo Live Series, Live at the Future Festival and many more shows he has performed at. Stormzy even went on to releasing and E.P called Not That Deep, doing remixes with other big artist's such as Section Boyz. Stormzy then ended up releasing the instrumental with a hook Heavy Trackers created 'Not That Deep' for other upcoming artists to rap on.
This is a performance based music video which has a narrative to the video as he is lip rapping to the song as the music was already pre-recorded. The reason why this has a Narative is so that people can relate to what he is talking about. Not that deep was a good title to name a song as it was a well known saying as everyone used to say it. Not that deep means No big deal. The reason we can tell this is also a performance is because many people were in the video, riding bikes and running through a shopping center, Stormzy also wore a mask in the music video to entertain the audience which can be definately be seen as a performance.
When Stormzy started rapping the camera angle started with a medium close up on Stormzy which revealed that he is the artist with authority. After that there was a wide shot which showed stormzy with his friends. Normally in grime music videos the artist's friends are in the videos to show support to the artist. An extra long shot was added in the video to show that everyone was on bikes, this reveals that teenagers like to ride bikes. The camera shot was mostly a medium shot on stormzy with his friends in the background as Stormzy has priority in the video as it is his song. Mise-en-scene was also a big part in the video as we can see in the beginning they were riding bikes on the car park as there was space. During the video they were shooting the video through a shopping center as they were running through, however we can tell that the camera was hand held as when they were running through the shopping center the camera was wobbling slightly. I believe they did this because it shows that they are original because not anyone has really done something like that, the reason why i say this is because professional music videos use equipment instead of hand held when moving at a rapid pace. There were things that were edited the video, one obvious one was when the scene goes from one to another whether it being at a different location or at the same doing something else or with props included such as the bikes being involved. In addition another thing that was edited in the video was in the beginning which were credits. There were no special effects in the video as it is kept simple and no complication involved in the video.
I believe the target audience is from 14-21 and i think that they are encouraged to buy the record as many of the teenagers can relate to the song. They can also be encouraged as Stormzy did perform this song at many places to gain a massive audience towards the song.
The ideas i could take from this video is to not use special effects in the video as the video can be kept simple and what i will subvert into my music video is to enjoy what i am doing in the video as we can see Stormzy and his friends enjoy the performance done towards the video.
However an editing technique i will use from this video to add to mine is to add credits in the end. and a camera technique i would use for my video is mostly close up/ medium shot on the artist mainly as they have priority in the video.

Prince Rapid - Whats Good / On Stuff - Analysis [Case Study 2]
Artist: Prince Rapid & Slix
Song: Whats Good / On Stuff
Released: 14th April 2016
Recorded: 2016
Genre: Grime
Producer(s): Prince Rapid
Synopsis
This is a performance based music video which has two songs in one which is good way to promote a mix-tape which he has out called 'Immortal'. By listening to this song i know straight away that it is a grime song. Grime is a genre of music which emerged in East London in early 2000's. It is primarily a development of UK garage and jungle. In the song Rapid says "You might see me in E3, You might see me in Popular" which are towns / cities in East London. This song is about chasing his dreams and telling the world that he has achieved some of them already but has more to achieve.
This is a performance based song as they are lip rapping in the song. The extreme close up on his lips demonstrates that he means what he is rapping about so therefore it is also narrative as there is a story behind the song. The reason why is because Grime is a genre which releases a hyped side of themselves in a song and the performance will also encourage the audience to feel the song. There was also a dancer in the video to entertain the video during the intro of the next song. He also dances throughout the song to keep the audience entertained.
When it comes to camera angles there are a few. It starts on a low angle towards Rapid which shows that he is the main artist in the song. Most angles in the video was a low angle shot, as there was also a low angle shot on Slix when he was rapping on the song 'On Stuff' It reveals that he also has power in the song. There was also panning in the video to show that he is with his friends and enjoying his life because he is chasing his dreams together with team called 'Ruff Squad' as there was also a close up on the clothing they are wearing which has Ruff Squad (RS) printed on it and know they wont fail if they continue together, as Rapid said in the dong "Its now or never". In the beginning there was an establishing shot of the blocks in the area 'E3' where the music video was set.
There was good editing in the video. One was when there was a medium close up on Rapid and he said "Skills like Jay Jay Okocha" (The ex footballer), the camera then moved and changed to a scene where someone kicked a ball into a goal. Another one was when Rapid said "Things do change in a flash" and it then went from a close up of him clicking his fingers and he was changed into different clothes. The creativity of the editing entertains the viewers because of the originality that the video has. However the rhythm in the editing in this video was mostly a straight cut with a few jump cuts, the pace of the song was also a normal pace fitting in with the song. That editing technique was used a few times in the chorus however it went from Rapid to different people lip rapping the song.
The target audience of this video are from young teenagers to young adults in their twenties. The reason why is because it is mostly young people who tend to have dreams and follow them with the right people who will help them exceed but not fail. They are encouraged to buy the record because they can relate to what is being said in the song and also in the last bit of the song which is called 'on stuff' was just a snippet, so therefore with them buying the record they will be able to listen to everything.
The idea i would take from the video to subvert in my own music video is to bring something bits which was demonstrated in the editing that was used.
This was when there was a close up shot of Rapid and he said "things can change in a flash" it then switched him into different clothes in the same setting, i found that very creative and original.

Chris Brown - With you ; Analysis [Case Study 1]
Artist: Chris Brown
Song: With You
Released: 24th October 2009
Recorded: 2009
Genre: R&B
Producer(s): Stargate
Synopsis
Chris brown performs a song called 'With you'. The video is set on a normal street in America, we can see this by the quick shots of the mise-en-scene (the yellow buses and the traffic lights). By watching this video i can see that this is a narrative and performance song. As we can see the reason to this is because this is a romance song about a lady he has fallen for. In the beginning of this video there is only a close up of his legs walking by himself, There is a lyric in the song which he says "I need you" and the close up on his legs walking on his own demonstrates that he is all alone until that lady comes by to stay with him. The performance in the video reveals his emotion throughout the video. Chris brown was lip singing (Already recorded in the studio) so the audience can focus more on the performance. The video focuses more on Chris Brown and his dance moves while utilizing several visual effects, as the video continues there are different women that appears with the camera demonstrating a close up which is giving a hint about who he is talking about, ' A Lady'. Is a close up on Chris Browns face as it reveals the facial expressions he has. The facial expressions reveals how is also feeling about the lady he is talking about. Chris brown mostly dances in the video to also reveal his feelings towards the girl who is talking about, The long shot in the video is to show his whole body. There were many special effects in the video, one was when Chris Browns jumper was changing colour, the changing of colour could relate to the different feeling he is having towards the girl he is taking about, he also states that he does not need money neither cars if he comes across the lady (Cause if i got you, I don't need money, I don't need cars, girl your my heart). the traffic lights in the video is added in the video with a low angle to go with what he is saying as there was a one way sign on it, the one way sign could be the way towards the lady. The slow motion was used for artistic effect, to create a romantic or suspenseful aura and to stress a moment in time. Also for the audience to have a sort of tension to be able to feel or know how Chris Brown is feeling towards this lady he is singing about.
The rhythm with the editing was slow in most parts of the video as this was a song that flows with emotion. The slowness gives time for the audience to think.
I believe his target audience are males from teenagers till older ages, the reason why i say this is because no matter your age anyone can find romance. This song can relate to people feelings towards their crushes and may even motivate them to reveal their feelings to the person who they actually have feelings for.
After watching this video there are a few ideas on which i would use and these are using effects to attract the audience even more and to also get a performance from the artist to make the video more exciting and also get somebody to dance.
An editing technique i would use is the slow pace shot / slow motion the reason for this is i believe my video is going to have an emotional narrative so including a bit of slow pace will have an effect towards that.
